Spin Tip: Standing Thumb Trick

On Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Craving a spin class with loud motivational music and sprint intervals, I took a Rev class, the Sports Club/LA version of spinning. Not only was the music rocking, but there was video, too! The class was treated to footage of the 2005 Tour de France on two large TVs; we watched the pros climb mountains as we cranked away on our stationary bikes. And I learned a new tip!

When you come out of the saddle, you don’t want to be too far forward, relying on your upper body to keep you balanced. But here’s a trick to keep you from hunching over and cheating: place just your thumbs lightly on the handlebars, if you don’t fall forward you are in a good position.

When standing on the peddles, you want to make sure you’re working your core and your legs and that your pelvis is directly over the crank (where the pedals attach). Next time you find yourself in a spin class, check yourself!
