An unbeaten century from Mohammad Hafeez powered Pakistan to a 10-wicket win over Zimbabwe in the second one-day international in Harare. Hafeez hit 139 not out off 147 balls, his best in ODIs, combining with Imran Farhat (75no) to amass the highest opening stand at Harare Sports Club as the tourists chased down their target of 226 with 7.5 overs to spare. That stand eclipsed the 104 partnership compiled by Hamilton Masakadza (68) and Brendan Taylor (50) which formed the backbone of Zimbabwe’s 225 for six but, in its pedestrian pace, ensured Pakistan would have...Continue reading »

Former England allrounder and county veteran Dominic Cork will leave Hampshire at the end of the 2011 season. While it would be premature to suggest that his departure will bring an end to a 21-year county career – there has been talk that another second division county may be interested in signing him – what is clear is that Hampshire have decided not to renew his contract for the 2012 campaign. Cork, who turned 40 in August, enjoyed some notable successes during his three-year stay at the Rose Bowl, winning the domestic 50-over competition in 2009 and...Continue reading »

Juventus baptised their new stadium in style with a thumping win over Parma that takes them to the top of the Serie A table. Antonio Conte could hardly have wished for a better start to life as coach of the Bianconeri as goals from Stephan Lichtsteiner, Simone Pepe, Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio eased them through their opening league game. A red card for Paolo De Ceglie and Sebastian Giovinco’s consolation for Parma prevented it from being a perfect start, but there were few complaints from the 40,000 fans inside the new Juventus Stadium. A new-look Juventus...Continue reading »

Took only two weeks for the first of the two Spanish giants to drop points – It was Barcelona, who managed to squander a comfortable 2-0 away lead against Real Sociedad to a 2-2 finish. Meanwhile, in Madrid, Getafe didn’t make it easy for Jose Mourinho’s side, but Real were too good, as expected, en route to a 4-2 victory. Karim Benzema opened the scoring early and was also the one to put the game beyond doubt (for the first time), grabbing the brace with one fantastic goal (the first) and a second one after a brilliant long pass from Angel Di Maria and terrible...Continue reading »

Sergio Aguero insists the team’s success comes before personal glory despite hitting his first hat-teick in English football. The £38million signing was in stunning finishing form as Wigan were swept aside 3-0, and the Argentinian has already struck six goals to keep him on the coat-tails of the top flight’s leading scorer Wayne Rooney. Aguero told City TV: “It was great to get the three goals but the most important thing is that we keep winning. “A hat-trick is good but for me the most important goal was the first one, as we needed to score.” Aguero...Continue reading »

Real Madrid remained top of the Primera Division table after beating Getafe, but Barcelona dropped their first points of the new campaign against Real Sociedad. Following on from their opening day 6-0 mauling of Real Zaragoza, Madrid were again amongst the goals as they downed Getafe 4-2 at the Bernabeu. Karim Benzema bagged a brace while Cristiano Ronaldo, taking his tally to 15 goals in his last six league games with a controversial penalty on the hour mark, and substitute Gonzalo Higuain were also on target for Jose Mourinho’s men. Miku netted a cool double for...Continue reading »

Roberto Mancini insisted his Manchester City side still need to improve – despite easing to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Wigan. Sergio Aguero’s brilliant hat-trick secured the win while City, inspired by David Silva in midfield, could afford to see Carlos Tevez miss a penalty and still take three points. Mancini said: “We had 15 chances in the first half and we scored only one goal – this is a problem because the game can change any moment.” He added: “Next time it’s better if we close out the game in the first half. “We...Continue reading »
